I decided to replace my over the range microwave with a vent only unit to get better smoke removal from the new kitchen remodel. After looking at many stainless units, I decided to get something with curved corners and soft folded edges like this model has. Looking at the specifications from the manufacturer sold me on purchasing this model. High air flow, great permanent filters and remote control for adjusting it from the other side of my kitchen. Unpacking the box i found it was defiantly secured for travel with ample styrofoam blocking holding every part firmly in the box. All of the items needed to install in a commercial environment are included but if you are installing in a face framed or frameless cabinet overhead you will need to get some extra hardware. I used Tee nuts on the bottom of my european frameless cabinet since I was worried standard wood screws at 3/4″ length might pull out since this thing weighs 40 pounds. Also the back wall hardware is next to impossible to access with the cabinet in place because the keyhole design of the support holes need to be set onto the hardware and lower down to engage. I solved this by utilizing zip toggles that hold themselves onto the drywall surface and allow you to thread into them a long 10/32 screw with a washer that pulls the entire unit tight to the wall while keeping it in place. You won’t be able to get to the top two back wall anchors very easily if at all since they are impossible to access with normal sized hands. This unit really needs a back wall create or hanger like microwaves use to secure it and make the installation easier and safer.
All of the functions are straight forward but it would be nice to be able to turn of the beep and also have a dimmer to lower the brightness of the display. Another thing might be to be able to see the clock all of the time and not just when you hit the power or fan button. It does have a great 1 minute to 15 minute timer function on the fan so that you can set it and walk away. Great for clearing out the fumes after you are done cooking.
Have not cleaned the filters as of yet but have cleaned similar commercial unit with the same design and generally they are a breeze to clean so I suspect that these can easily go through your dishwasher with good soap and come out spotless.
I gave it a 4 star on the noise meaning that it is very quiet on number 1 setting, probably about 65 decibels or normal talking noise levels.
4 stars on the install because I had to engineer and provide needed hardware. I install kitchens for a living so I have seen it all good and bad.
5 stars on power because this thing has an 8 inch duct and really move the air. If you don’t connect the duct and blow just into the cabinet it will open the doors fully even with Blum self closing euro hinges. Amazing power. Don’t try to restrict it by sizing down to 7″ or 6″ you will just be disappointed. Even using the provided flex duct is a NO NO because many codes require solid galvanized steel ductwork with only two 90 degree bends all the way through the roof for the system to pass. If you keep the 8″ duct in the system you can remove smoke at an amazing rate without worries of setting off the smoke alarm.
Overall the build quality is very good and looks like it was engineered for full time commercial use but very sleek and elegant for residential kitchens. I love that it is so smooth so I won’t worry about hitting my head since it is right at that height for disaster.
